Weight, before anything goes in it
An empty leather tote of the same size can weigh two to three times what a canvas one does. If you carry a bag for eight or nine hours — commuting, campus, hospital shifts — that difference is the whole decision. Start here.

Canvas dries. Leather, untreated, does not enjoy either humidity or a sudden downpour, and unlacquered hardware will spot. If your bag lives on a motorbike or in a rickshaw, canvas is the lower-anxiety option.
How each one ages
This is the real trade-off:
- Canvas stays roughly what it was, then wears at the corners and handles. It doesn't get better; it gets older.
- Leather looks worse for six months and better for six years. It takes on the shape of what you carry.
If you want a bag that becomes yours, leather. If you want a bag that works, canvas.
Price, honestly
At the same price point, canvas buys you more bag — bigger, better lined, better hardware. A cheap leather tote is usually bonded leather, which is offcuts glued together and will peel. A good canvas bag beats a bad leather one every single time.
